philosophy

We gently create organic kids threads + slings in small batches. Inspired by the heart of our multicultural heritage and life and the will to make a kinder, more sustainable world, we design for families who want their everyday choices to reflect their value systems.

Buddhika Kids will change the world!

BUDDHIKA

Sri Lankan Sinhala name meaning ‘wisdom’Originating from Sanskrit and meaning:

‘To be awake, to be enlightened’.

Why did we choose it? It reminded us of the process of understanding fair and sustainable making and realising the value of organic fabrics not only for the wearer, but for the planet and all its inhabitants.

Oh, and we also chose it because it’s the name my mother gave me 🙂

in harmony; not harm

At Buddhika, we care about process, result and impact. All of our offerings are ethically made from organic cotton or organic linen. We honour ancient Asian methods of printing (many of our fabrics have been printed by hand using hand-carved wooden blocks or hand dyed), choose AZO-free eco-friendly, certified organic or natural dyes and honour traditional motifs as well as our own signature designs enlightened by Earth, art and culture. Each and every Buddhika piece is sewn to life through human expertise (and 99% are hand cut).

Our offerings are either made here in Australia (usually by us, but we may on occasion have help from skilled sewists) or by a small group of talented artisans in Lucknow, India, working in a genuinely respectful, fair trade environment where women are empowered and supported to learn new skills. We embrace sustainability and quality – small production numbers, wearable art and culture and comfortable-for-kids design rather than throw away trends. We do not focus on season-based collections, but instead try to create offerings that can be used across seasons. This helps to reduce the need for more clothes (and in turn reduces the demands on our planet when we create them), makes our offerings accessible to kids anywhere in the world regardless of climate and because this approach allows parents to plan ahead of seasons if necessary.

who we design for

Families are specially positioned to bring positive change to the world. As parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and close friends, our everyday decisions teach kids how to live life. We believe it is the small, daily decisions, not only the big, that matter. Through delightful textiles that tell a story, we support families in empowering their children to live meaningfully and use their choices to help Earth and to create a fairer world.
